on hipster culture and luxury

Lately my most favorite thing to do is buy groceries. I mean... I like buying groceries because I want to cook more often and, let's face it, it's just so satisfying to open a fridge full of food. No wonder I'm getting so big these days. I get so excited shopping for "pantry staples," which, in my case, translates to hoarding all the main ingredients needed for a pasta sauce. Thus, I wanted to buy myself a real cookbook and start cooking other stuff for a change. I began browsing Amazon and came upon this cookbook. It's not actually a cookbook but I was intrigued because it appears to be one of those magazine/books (mooks) that combine food essays, food photography, and recipes. I was determined to purchase it right before I read this review, and then I realized am I big phony? It struck a chord in me because I'm not really a food person but the sight of rustic food served in beautiful china on a warm Sunday afternoon in a country-side barn (you see where I'm going with this?) is like a dream come true. I want to be the Barefoot Contessa basically. It's kind of a dream life. But it made me question my aspirations. Is it really a good thing to aspire all these? Am I pretentious? Somehow I feel like such a superficial human being for aspiring this "Southern-France dinner scenario" like hunger does not exist. Reading this review made me stop and think about what our society has become nowadays. I don't think it's a bad thing to like beautiful things but I think there's a need to draw the line if I start buying things beyond my means just to keep up, show-off, or pretend in any way or form.

Here are the great (eloquent) quotations from said review:

It's rare that a cookbook would evoke such vitriol, but after I received The Kinfolk Table: Recipes for Small Gatherings, I was livid. I realized that this wasn't a celebration of food and gathering and the magic those two ignite, this was the sound of one hand clapping, a coffee-table book devoted to the very "cool" artists and Web celebrities from across the country. The narrative principally centers on the people, not the food, which would be fine if that were the intention. Without a clear narrative and culinary journey, we're left to merely weave in and out of kitchens like a spool of thread, but we're not invited to linger. Rarely do we see the fruits of the contributors' labor and the gatherings they so fastidiously rhapsodize. The Kinfolkers drive miles for mussels and set a formidable table in their outdoor barns. Theirs is a life of a cultivated beauty that serves up the illusion of simplicity. In reality, the Tao of Kinfolk is nothing more than understated affluence and luxury. Theirs are gatherings where meals are photographed with a thousand-dollar camera; where everyone has clean skin, shiny hair, and ebullient optimism; where kids play around the paddock. Theirs is a world that exists for few.

All of this raises a question: Were the recipes in this cookbook tested in a real kitchen so we, as consumers, may be certain the chemistry is on point? Was the cookbook proofed by professionals (of the editorial and culinary varieties)? After thumbing through three-hundred-plus pages, it occurs to me that the Kinfolk cookbook is a variation on a single theme: the creation of a life lived in an Anthropologie catalog. It's the reason why we get lost in blogs and the lives of strangers. We want to be happy, always. We want a life free of storms and sorrow. We want our linens, and bowls, and kitchens with reclaimed wood -- and in this way, Kinfolk succeeds, for its America is rarefied and specific, rife with denizens who are preened to dishabille perfection and apply pretty filters to their photos. I recall a similar charade: GOOP. While escapism looks lovely on paper, in practice it's difficult and expensive. You don't need a book to tell you how to gather, you don't need a formula to cultivate simplicity. Find the people you love, a space to lay down plates, and a meal that binds the two.

hello there

Today, I became one of those girls who take pictures of flowers. I bought these pink roses from Philcoa, a habit I'm trying to continue each week. I should have done this a long time ago. Because I live alone, it's nice to buy things that simply make you smile. If only I had the photography chops to capture the soft afternoon light in my bedroom, that would comprise the third photo. These days I've been clearing my mind and focusing on my to-do lists.

Summer is almost coming to a close. I had my mandatory beach vacations in Quezon Province and Caramoan Islands. Later this month, I'll be homeward bound to be with my papa for his birthday. By June, I'll be off to Singapore for my first overseas trip. At present time, I'm simply enjoying this Monday afternoon: flowers, coffee, and my every dose of reality TV.

random thoughts on a saturday night

(1) Greg Laswell's voice has been on the loop for the past twenty four hours. I cannot get enough of his songs. I discovered how beautiful "This Woman's Work" is. It's a song originally written and sang by Kate Bush. God, it's sooooo goooood. Every week or so I try to look for new songs I can drown myself into. And this week has been Zola Jesus' Lick the Palm of the Burning Handshake, Greg Laswell's cover of This Woman's Work, as well as originals like It's Been A Year and Come & Goes. The guy is amazing! It's good to finally relax on the whole Lana shit. Hahahaha.

(2) Dmitry Sholokhov won Project Runway Season 10. I gotta admit he's my favorite. But I feel heartbroken for Fabio. His collection was definitely the winner: ethereal, distinctive, and very very conceptual. Who would have thought pastel colors could be sooo fashionable. I wish there were two winners this year. (Yeah I know I'm addicted to reality TV. I want to stop caring. I love it. It's my anime.) And can I just say how hot Dmitry is. I have a thing for Eastern European creatives with a svelte figure and a sexy face. Yum.

(3) Jesse Williams. I don't know where to begin. Where can I buy a guy who looks exactly like him? I'm obsessed!!! He's way too hot. I have been daydreaming about his face, his body all day every day. No shame. Seriously, his eyes can undress a thousand panties. He's that hot. Hot. Have I mentioned hot? I want to be all over his d*ck. How's that for ya?

smiling randomly at 3 am

So quiet. Drinking stale iced cold coffee. Cramming a few hours of work till five. Shooting Wena's film the whole day Sunday. Excited. Overwhelmed. Smiling deliriously because of this country song. Yes, I'm losing it!

Boom boom? Mmm Mmm? Hahaha cheesetastic tong kantang to, pero somehow it makes me smile. Like this ^____^.

Thor, Lord, Buddha, please help me get through the weekend. Love, your lowly, country-song-loving servant, me!

hello hello (cacannn you hear me...)

Hi blog! Long time no see! I have turrets now I can't type without exclamation points. It's been sooooo long talong! Hahaha I missed you or not. What's up?

I'm sick right now. Kinginang ubo't sipon to. Kakangongo, kakapagod. I actually need to catch-up on work asap but here I am writing nonsense. Aww I miss blogging. A lot has happened I don't know where to start.

I guess I'll start with my recent obsession: The Bachelorette! I'm sooo invested on this damn TV show it's embarrassing. I've fallen in love with Jef (one f) Holm. If only guys like him grow on trees. First thing Monday, I immediately checked if he won. I was even planning to host a pizza beer party if he won the show, which he did. This girl might as well be me; difference is I'm not drugged. What does that say about me? Ha ha ha

I just bought a couch. Yes, first solid furniture in the house. Makes me feel so adult buying big stuff. It's not brand new or anything but boy it feels sooo cozy. Sarap magcuddle-cuddle, hanky-panky sa couch. Haha. I can't wait to re-paint my humble abode. Ang sikip nga lang pero arte pa ba? Slowly but surely I wish to create a space I can really call my own. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

Basketball. Have I mentioned before how crazy I am about Rajon Rondo? I don't understand why I get easily obsessed these days. But yeah, him and the entire Boston Celtics keep me up at night. I'm excited for the new season, but I'm also heartbroken that Ray Allen chose to sign with the Heat for the next three seasons. I can only imagine what TD Garden would sound like once he plays for Miami against Boston come ber-months.

Right now, I feel at peace save for this flu. It feels great to accomplish little things at work and at home. Looking forward to more obsessions as 2012 ends. I'll try to post pics once I finish my little apartment dreams. =D

6/26/12

so what's up?

Long time no blog! What have I been up to these days? Not much. I'm just eating a lot of bananas.

After spending a significant amount of time toasting myself at the beach (or shall I say bitchesss), I'm home, in the province, with my father. Actually, it's been a more than a month since I've been home. I'm hoping I'm fatter nowadays, and fairer. Please let me be fairer. I'm done being a "travel agent" for the summer month. Lately, it's been work, work, facebook, work, and Travel Channel. That's it. If I'm not busy working, I'm researching about the entire history of the Boston Celtics and googling words like "how to be an internet sensation." And lately, I'm baffled about my sudden interest in black men. For once, I'd like to say the words "once you go black you never go back." They are hot hot hot. I'll save this for another post.

Today, I'm taking a day off. I just bought a Kindle version of Gail Simmon's Talking With My Mouth Full. I can't wait to read books for pleasure again. This time I really want to read non-fiction books on food. I have fallen in love with Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires. I want more! I want to own a copy of MFK Fisher's The Art of Eating, Ruth Reichl's Tender at the Bone, Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird, and Molly Wizenberg's A Homemade Life. If only Amazon ships books to the Philippines.

Anyway, that's it for now. I haven't psyched myself up to write something coherent. I just want to curl-up in bed and read. Goodnight, blogosphere!

P.S. I've read this great article written by Sam Anderson entitled In Defense of Distraction. It's an extremely long article, but if you're like me who works from home and is online most of the time, you'll love his insights on why we are so unfocused and distracted nowadays. Funny and brilliant! (blurb?) KThanksBye!

random friday

1. I miss watching movies. I miss the feeling of being moved. I miss the reaction I had when I first watched Last Night. Hope to watch My Dinner with Andre before May ends.
2. Reminiscing Bantayan Cebu with Joy, Limay, and Panyang (with Elle and Kat). I still can't believe we were able to catch-up after all these years. And it's great to know nothing has changed. We still laugh and "sneer" (more emphasis on the sneer haha) at the same things. I feel sooo blessed with my homies and my girlfriends (old and new). Arte?
3. My father surprised me with durian last Monday. I ate probably around 10-15 pieces. Now I know I'm home. Tagal ko rin pinagpantasyahan to. Lalake?

randomness

(sinama talaga tong donut para lang talaga may picture jusko)

I just want to write random things. Yan yung kinain naming donut kanina sa Indo Cafe or something to that effect. Ang ganda kasi nung bilog na kuha ng Instagram. Haha! Umpisa pa lang wala ng kwenta tong post na to.

I haven't slept much for the past few days, which led me to suffer from extreme tension headache. Gahol gahol sa trabaho para makagala ng bongga ngayong summer shet.

I've read a great article on Thought Catalog: 6 Things You Learn at 25. Wow! Ang fresh nung topic diba? This quote made me laugh out loud.

"If you’re a 25-year-old who feels safe, secure, certain, well-adjusted, and unwaveringly sure of your amazing life, you’re either blowing industrial grade crack smoke up your own ass, or you’re a self-deluding baby whose greatest accomplishment will likely be getting voted Least Likely to Achieve Intellectual, Professional, Social or Spiritual Heights Beyond the Low Level at Which Their Own Self-Satisfied Apathy Permanently Stagnated Them Into a Life of Sad Mediocrity."

Ang dami daming nererecommend saking shows and movies: Lost, Walking Dead, Homeland Security, My Sister's Keeper, The Godfather, Memento, Mulholland Drive... Humanda to saken sa May.

For the first time in a long time, marami-rami nakong natatapos na libro: Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential, Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires, and Tina Fey's Bossypants. Currently reading: Murakami's What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, Sarah Turnball's Almost French, and Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. Ang pretentious diba? I love it! Kapit nalang sa sirang mata.

Excited nako for Cranberries concert tomorrow. My first official concert. Watta losah!

That's all folks! I've discovered a few cool websites: Explore and Brain Pickings. And this! =D

fuerza bruta or brocha

long post ahead. The other week, Banuk invited me to watch Fuerza Bruta, a unique postmodern interactive show like no other. Fuerza Bruta literally means "brute force" in Spanish. It was created by Diqui James and was first produced in Argentina. Throughout the entire show, we moved around the open space like herded cattle, blinded by neon bright lights, and ambushed by heart-thumping techno music. But I would have to say it was the most original, if not the most gimmicky, show I've ever seen thus far.
Upon entering the stage area, we were confused where the hell we should place ourselves. The crowd was definitely young, urban, and well-dressed. I had the impression these people liked to "partey." I promised to keep an open mind before going to the show. Whatever I was about to experience, I vowed to take it all in. Dancing? Splashes of water? Tsugs Tsugs flare? I'm in! But I have to admit, I'm no fan of disco or extremely loud techno music for that matter. It's not just my cup of tea. But as I've said this night was about being open. And Banuk and I were definitely in for some what-the-fuck moments. As the show was about to start, a voice could be heard saying, "Please move around the stage area as the show goes on for your safety." Safety?
This mysterious man was the central figure of the show. Dressed in white sleeves and tie, he starts walking on this giant treadmill, slowly the walk became a jog, and the jog became a run. The disturbing thing was the rope tied on his shirt. If that wasn't disturbing enough, we suddenly heard a loud gunshot out of nowhere. The next thing we knew he was already bleeding on the treadmill. This mysterious man would return later in the show. This time he wakes up on a bed, starts eating on the table, and begins to frantically arrange the said furniture as the giant treadmill continuously moves. Yes, he's always on that damn treadmill.
As the treadmill disappeared, the entire space turned pitch black. A metallic curtain blazing in neon lights appeared. My heart was beating furiously as the booming music surrounded the entire space. Two beautiful women appeared walking sideways across the wall. I suddenly remembered a carnival stunt in Bislig where motorcycles drove horizontally across a walled arena. This looks exactly like that, except these women were dancing sideways with only  a piece of rope holding their backs. It was a delightful exhibition full of heart-thumping energy. I keep saying the word "thumping" because the show literally played with my nerves.
More dancing and trashing ensued. I can't help but smile as I recall the Energy of each performer. At one point, they came down the stage and started dancing in the middle of the crowd. Each dance was coupled with extravagant party-popping confetti.
After a gazillion of wohooos, the long-awaited water exhibition happened. A ginourmous yet shallow pool made of thick plastic hovered over us. One by one female performers, wearing skimpy tanks and panties, started crashing and throwing themselves onto the pool. At times it was a bit painful to watch.Other times, it was quite fascinating to see them do a synchronized dance, lying face down for the audience, like mermaids in a big fish pool. The guys from the audience were more than happy to see a sea of sexy (and tight I must say) butts pressed against the transparent pool. I was patiently waiting for a male performer clad in tight briefs to start crashing his precious body for all of us to see. That didn't happen. I was extremely disappointed.
The final exhibition involved three performers climbing up a tall ladder and jumping straight into the audience, with a strong artificial wind blowing on their face. The show ended with a slight water shower for the audience as an Indian-looking DJ started playing upbeat music for the crowd to dance. I was reserved and I wanted more weird stunts. But it was one heck of a show, definitely.
The after-party was another story. I had a LOT of fun dancing with Bunak. Yes, we were just seizing the moment, enjoying every bit of this weird night-out. Because we bought discounted tickets via Ensogo, we we had to order drinks for ourselves. I wanted a cosmopolitan and Banuk eagerly ordered rum cola. We suddenly realized we haven't asked for the price of the said drinks in the first place. Upon searching the menu, we saw that San Mig Light costs P130 a bottle, which means our drinks were surely a tad more expensive than regular beer. Shit! To make matters worse, a pack of Marlboro costs P250 each. Tunginuh! I couldn't keep a straight face. Sabi ni Banuk, "te yung mukha mo ayusin mo, kunwari okay lang!" No!!! So to get our money's worth, we spent the rest of the night dancing like idiots. We were one of the three groups of people dancing on the floor. Shy at first, but, you know, the drinks were expensive, might as well dance dance dance!

clueless

She knew she was bad at flirting. However, she wasn't quite sure just how bad. The last thing she wanted to do that night was pretend to be thy royal hotness. Despite how drunk she was, she just couldn't muster the courage. She liked to believe that honesty was the best way to go. Then maybe if she falls flat on her face, it would look like a graceful quirkiness. This mindset proved to be a bad omen.

There he was looking sinfully attractive, the type who she immediately considered part of the "out of my league" category. His face was, for the lack of a better word, delicious. He looked like the younger brother of Zhang Ziyi's love interest in a movie with Asian themes and daggers. She loved the way his blue-collared shirt hung perfectly on his body, not too thin, not too buff, just the perfect balance of boyish and manly.

And there she was. Horny.

Maybe it was all the booze and the cigarettes. She did notice the small cracks on his cheeks. But those little details didn't bother her that much. It could have been tiny slivers of shit and still he'd be pretty. All she could think of was how to successfully bring him back to her place without the need to drag him, intoxicate him, or, God forbid, beg him. At the same time, she was wracking her horny-as-fuck brain to think of something clever to say. All she could come up was this:

"So where did you guys come from?"
"We were just drinking at some place in Timog."
"Oh..."

(insert awkward, defeaning silence)

"I actually noticed you before."
"Really?"
"Yeah, you were the good-looking guy I saw last December at my org's play."

(Cool.)

And the conversation became even "more" interesting.

"So how old are you?"
"1985."
"I'm 25 years old."

(Is this really happening? Elegance was supposed to be about being coy and mysterious. Well, who said anything about elegance in the first place?)

Then the guy asks her:

"So are you single?"
"Recently. You?"
"Still single."
"Oh so you're like George Clooney."
"Huh?"

She knew deep inside her heart this moment was anything but pretty. Sadly, she always thought of herself as witty. Wit can only survive so much sexual frustration. The more she tried to take control of the situation, the more it spiraled into a furry ball of disaster.

"I really don't know how to do this. I'm sorry."

She was living her worst nightmare. For the next few minutes all she could muster was light one cigarette after another. Sometime ago, she did envision what it would be like to meet someone new. This definitely was not how she imagined it would be.

(Awkward grammar and tone aside, it's important for me to write something.)

Tawa ako ng tawa dito. Recently ko lang napanuod tong trending series na to. First was Shit New Yorkers Say, but I think these videos came first. Panalo yung junk food eating scene sa first episode. LOL.

I like how this sounds.

I'm currently in a monogamous relationship with my bed.
It's been a long time since I rode a bicycle. I was able to do it again this week and had an accident. Idiot.
So excited to watch the new Bones episode. Bonesing!
Finally moved to our new place. It's been a very physical week.

cryin for mgg

Umiiyak nako kakatawa. Seriously. I don't know why. Pakapayat ng katawan ni koya. Mahihiya ang kawayan sa giling nya. And I so want to achieve that "rip my shirt off" dance. Magbabayad ako para makasayaw sama si gubler. Hahaha Very effective to pampasaya ng araw ko: Matthew Gray Gubler dancing like a lewd monkey. Gusto ko yung kilig school girl at kilig dahil nanunuod ka ng taong parang tanga. Lurv, luff, luv him.

facts and fancy

(source 1,2,3)

Magandang pictures dahil adik ako sa magandang pictures. On another note, puro random facts si Manuk Abante kanina.

1. The most children born to one woman was 69, she was a peasant who lived a 40 year life, in which she had 16 twins, 7 triplets, and 4 quadruplets. (sure naman daw na tao ito at hindi baboy)
2. Each day, there are over 120 million sexual intercourse taking place all over the world. (fuck you sexual intercourse, fuck you! lol)
3. If you mouth the word "colorful" to someone, it looks like you are saying "I love you". (cute. gagawin mo sya literal noh?)
4. Most of us have microscopic, worm like mites named Demodex that live in our eyelashes and have claws and a mouth. (why?)
5. The world's youngest parents were 8 and 9 and lived in China in 1910. (wala akong comment dito pwede pa lang maging boring at interesting all at the same time ang isang fact. ranggay!)

...at ang pinakahuli at pinaka hindi ako makarelate. (ha ha ha)
6. Studies show that men are put off by groups of loud women. If a woman wants to get a date, she should break away from a loud group to give a man a chance to approach her. (ha ha ha, or kumapit ka lagi sa bakla para mas lalong wala kang mahita. true story.)

random eureka

I just spent the last two hours reading this girl's blog. Thing is, I feel so happy for her. I aspire to create a life just like her. For the longest time I haven't thought about marriage and kids. My dearest friends know that I have a bit of a Carrie/Samantha/Miranda syndrome when it comes to children. And honest to God, as much as I love clothes, I'm not one of those girls who have conjured their dream wedding since childhood. I don't know why but I just can't remember planning or even thinking about it. And then came this magical age of 25. I want to have a family. There I've said it, and I mean it. Let this be that day, quite a pivotal moment in my life because now this is already part of my dreams.

10/22/11

weird dreams

I've been having weird dreams lately.

Someone dragged me out of bed while I was asleep, and pulled me under the computer table. I was screaming on top my lungs and my roommate was pulling me out. And then I woke up. Okay nightmare. Next!

I went back to sleep. Next thing I knew I was on the same table with Johnny Depp, dining and not talking. I was really cool about it. He was talking to someone who eventually left. Johnny was having a cup of coffee and smoking cigarettes. I didn't feel giddy whatsover. I just know he was The Johnny Depp.

And then someone came to the table. He resembled someone: curly hair, lanky silhouette, and camel suit. His face was in disguise, something like a Halloween make-up. He ate my order and he was apologizing for it. And then it dawned on me that he was Matthew Gray Gubler. When he realized I already recognized him, he began to ran away from me and I chased him like a madman.

I can't remember exactly what happened in between. All I knew was that I was up in the air with Matthew and we were about to skydive. Yes, freakin skydiving with Matthew Gray Gubler. I love my dreams. He held my hand, and I was screaming as we went ahead and jumped from the helicopter, together!

When I landed, I saw my two sisters who were probably skydiving themselves. I told them I'd come home with them because I miss my mother so much. So I went home and saw my mother cooking in the kitchen. I remember arguing with my sister while I was taking a bath. And then the weirdest thing happened. When I was drying myself with a towel, I noticed I grew four extra nipples on my left breasts - well, actually I had five left breasts all lined-up vertically on the left side of my body. The horror!

I quickly got off the shower and told my mother and sisters about it. I even showed them the freaky nipples. My mother just said, "Oh, that's weird. Maybe you need to have it checked."

"You think?"

My sisters were not at all surprised too. I was freaking out now. I went to the mirror crying and as I looked at myself... oh for the love of God my right breasts have also multiplied - this time they were shaped like hearts. Nipple human hearts, the one with all the ventricles. And the original five left breasts/nipples became penises. Nipple penises. Dear Lord. What the f is happening to me? I'm a mother dog with lotsa nipples. A bitch. Waahhhhhhhh!!!

And then I woke-up. I was laughing so hard. I looked liked this. I wish I was making all these up.

What could these dreams possibly mean?

10/17/11

nostalgia

I was walking our usual street when I caught the smell of burnt dry leaves. Sweeping dry leaves was one of my favorite house chores. I like how the stones and gravel look after you get rid of the leaves and candy wrappers. Our slippers were neatly tucked on the third step of the brick stairs. It's that time of day when we're about to cook rice for dinner and you can see the soft sunlight gracing the front porch.

what's on my mind

Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know. I've been listening to this song over and over again. It's not the most positive song I've heard but it speaks something really special to me. The melody sends shivers down my spine. And the lyrics remind me of bittersweet memories. I saw this comment on YouTube's, and it just struck a chord in me. I wish I was talented and articulate enough, I would have said something along these lines.

"Tiptoes, shows feet first, the nakedness and vulnerability of human love. When I heard it on the radio I was surprised there was another point of view - first he was a victim, then actually it was her - but different points of view no less. Very Peter Gabrielesque... love the art of their 'relationship' with the patchwork of memories and emotions.. and at the end she is free but he is not.. it makes me want to love better and hold people close.. there is always someone that we used to know..."
