my 12 commandments

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin is so inspirational. I am constantly looking for inspiring things, and as tim gunn says, "get inspired if it kills you."

One particular article that resonates to me is the "12 Personal Happiness Commandments". I was hooked and I started making my own. Somehow I ended up writing lots and lots of witty life lessons I have accumulated over the years (but have yet to follow religiously), and so I decided to pick and choose and narrow it down to 12. In the process, I asked myself which of these ( I managed to list 46 things lol) most reflective and impactful in my life. In no particular order...

1. Be Aika. - Always stay true to who you are. You have to know yourself and take care of yourself.
2. Do what you love to do. - This speaks to your passion. Go for it.
3. If you hate something, change it. - It's not good to stick around things that don't work.
4. Confidence is sexy. - Nothing is more beautiful than a confident person.
5. Don't overthink. - It's good to analyze but be careful when it becomes obsessive.
6. Dig deep. - Dig really really deep in the face of challenges.
7. You can rather than you can't. - You are what you think. Say this out loud.
8. Do it now. - No more delays. If a task is too big, break it down to small, manageable tasks.
9. Learn to let go. - It is a waste of time of worry and wallow about things that you can't control.
10. Take care of your relationships. - Recognize, value and nurture the people who truly cares.
11. Sometimes, it's not always about you. - There are times when you need to get over yourself. Seriously.
12. Stop focusing on what other people do. Focus on bettering yourself, and you'll feel better. (These are my favorite words from Lulu. It's simple, direct and true.)

I acted quickly on this. Normally, I wait for a time to sit down and write about something that has touched me deeply, but now I decided to do it once and for all. There's a difference when you delay things. I am really pushing myself to be better in 2011, whatever it takes for me to do just that. I want to look back a year from now and see if I have at least lived half of these commandments. I already feel so refreshed and bursting with enthusiasm as I write this. Care to make yours?
